Thailand - The land of massage

I recently visited Thailand, one of the goals being to experience Thai oil massages and picking up tips that would benefit my own massage reportoire.

In all the cities, towns and villages that I visited there was an abundance of massage shops, so plenty of choice! Thai massage is one of the influences to Raynor Massage. Indeed, there were consistent similarities in face/head massages and massages along definite lines on the arms, legs and back (Thai Sen lines - there is some overlap between these and Raynor bands).

Whilst in Chiang Mai I came across 'Tok Sen' massage which I had not heard of before. Tok Sen is an ancient northern Thailand practise that involves the use of a special wooden hammer and wedge to relax muscles in a rhythmically tapping motion. Tok means to hammer or hit, Sen refers to the pathways through the body. The idea is that the unique vibrations created by the Tok Sen technique deeply penetrate the body's muscles and aid the release of tension. Unfortunately I ran out of time to try out a Tok Sen massage, but it's on my list for my next visit to Thailand!
